Finding Structure in Complexity

I've lived my life in overlapping arcs - mathematician, engineer, portfolio manager, founder, photographer, singer - all driven by the same force: the need to uncover structure in the noise, and build something new.

Basis Vectors

I grew up believing that mathematics was a language for describing the world, but as I transitioned from mathematics → applied mathematics, it became an invaluable framework for robust decisions - the hidden trade-offs, the nonlinearities, the places where intuition and structure must work together.

Prime Factors

Whether modeling semiconductor physics, optimizing bandwidth networks, flying an aircraft engine with real-time constraints, or managing global capital through chaos, the process was always the same at its core. Ask the right questions, and systems reveal themselves.

Harmonics

I've always carried a camera, trying to catch the geometry of light in the outdoors. My vocals - sometimes solo, sometimes layered with my keyboards - was where my chaos found its own kind of order.

Dimensions

I build things that learn and adapt. I build things that make sense of complexity without losing their character. M-Cube is the latest expression of that instinct - but it's just one chapter in a longer story about curiosity, risk, and pursuit of novelty.

The Journey

IBM Microelectronics

Advisory Software Engineer

Developed fast, discretized physics-based models for circuit simulation - an early equivalent of today's quantized large language models, long before the term existed. Used reinforcement-learning style optimization to design circuits ... in 1997.

Early career

ExxonMobil Strategic Research

Senior Staff Mathematician

Applied nonlinear optimization to corporate decision-making. As Exxon 'merged with' Mobil Oil and we joked how the new company name is pronounced with the "Mobil silent", it struck me that nonlinear math could determine how companies allocate capital and manage trade-offs. My eventual gateway into finance.

Level 3 Communications

Optimization, Data & Modeling Researcher

Co-invented a model with the CEO connecting the economics of bandwidth to the physical realities of network operations - a patent that helped shape the early internet backbone. Mathematical structure driving billion-dollar decisions.

United Technologies Research Center

Research Scientist

Developed real-time nonlinear optimization algorithms implemented on an actual aircraft engine. Never thought I would be re-inventing a matrix factorization, but that was part of a series of inventions that ran the engine and earned an Outstanding Achievement Award.

American Century Investments

Senior Analyst → Portfolio Manager

Joined a year before Lehman collapsed, as an analyst doing fundamental research on international small and midcap stocks. Thanks to my edge in analyzing businesses and interviewing company management across sectors, I became one of the fastest promotions to Portfolio Manager in the firm's history. Led a three-year post-GFC turnaround beating the benchmark by 900 bps annualized - the best stretch in the fund's history.

Pearl Brook Capital

Founder & Chief Investment Officer

Left a coveted portfolio manager seat to start Pearl Brook to pursue a non-traditional idea - what if we could deliver the promise and depth of global small caps without the volatility? Jumped off a cliff with a modest launch and irrational levels of conviction, and built a hedge fund that actually hedged - from scratch. A year later, in August 2015, when global markets were down 10–12%, and my fund was down only 1.5%, a hedge-fund legend and sports-team owner got impressed, and offered to become my anchor investor and partner. My startup boutique turned into an institutional operation, with offices on two continents. Over 6 years, the hedged long-short fund produced 2x the risk-adjusted returns of the HFRI hedge fund index, and the long-only carve-out outperformed the MSCI benchmark by 1000 bps annualized.

M-Cube Technologies

Founder

The convergence of my life's work in mathematics, computation and markets: an AI engine that learns, adapts, and trades live capital - and can replicate any investment strategy. Built on the same mathematical lineage that shaped my work across disciplines, and founded on my decades of investing in the global markets, developed on an AI substrate.

Indraneel Das with parallel computing cluster

For three decades, I have lived at the intersection of (mathematical) models, complex systems that often don't bend to physics, and extracting signals from the understated.
From semiconductor physics to corporate decision-making,
from global capital allocation to AI-native market systems —
I went broad and deep:
♫ I Did it My Way ♫

Complex systems reveal their structure when you approach them with the right abstractions.

An AI-native market system that learns, adapts, and trades live capital, and produces stellar outperformance.
